The film follows the Carolina Phoenix, a semi-professional women's tackle football team based in Durham, North Carolina. Accounts from players and observations of them throughout their 2013 championship season testify to their strength and resilience in the face of historically entrenched gender expectations – offering an alternative narrative to th​at which is typically portrayed in traditional media.​
